SOUTH BALI HAS A NUMBER OF SECRET BEACHES, AND BALANGAN IS AMONG THE MOST GUARDED BY SWITCHED-ON SURFERS
For avid and intrepid wave riders, the Bukit Peninsula is the promised land bedazzled with ravishing ocean tides and unspoiled beaches, mostly known by word of mouth. Those who are dreaming of picturesque pre-wedding photo shoots should also book a spot somewhere around the sandy lines framing Bali’s south edges. One thing’s for sure, they don’t call these beaches secret for no reason. Often each location is remote and bewildering with makeshift road signs and bumpy, treacherous paths. But once you’ve managed to pass all that, a vista revealing azure frothy sea breakers will knock your socks off.
Balangan is a name that only some people in the know willingly divulge. Overshadowed by Pecatu, its sister beachfront, Balangan is still relatively low on visitors despite its expansive cliff providing ample parking space. It has of course been mentioned every now and then in the list of surfing destinations on the island, but more than that Balangan Beach is a sun-kissed hideaway untouched by five-star commercialism. And these days in Bali that is rare.
To get to the location, you have to rely on either a car or a two-wheel ride. A right turn off the Ungasan intersection will set you along the extensive meandering asphalt path flanked by assorted village houses and then a mass of dense green trees. Before reaching the Balangan cliff end, a manual entrance system by the villagers – though sometimes unattended – will charge Rp. 5,000 per car.
