localista
the setting
Localista is the place you knew you always wanted to go to; and now it is there, on Jalan Suweta, Ubud, and you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. Whether it’s the quick sit-down and coffee fix, the power lunch or the coffee conversation – Localista with its easy drop-in style of European or New York cafes can take care of it.
Open to the street, it is lively inside and out with the buzz of conversations in many accents taking place between clients, staff and passersby. It has a light breezy feel to it with elegantly soft décor that has a retro edge in its colour scheme but a very modern approach in its appearance. On the walls framed photographs tell the Localista story, and as you will see it is a story of coffee and conversation.
the food
Soma Helmi, the creator of Localista, is on a personal quest to have us all understand the power of cupcakes. The cupcake selection at Localista changes daily and the cakes are made with organic, fresh, local ingredients with no artificial colourings. They even have gluten-free cupcakes on Mondays and Fridays, and people are subtly lured all the way up from the south with little messages on Facebook, specifically to indulge, admittedly before yoga... yes, a little personal confession here!
More substantial foods, as if you can’t live on cupcakes alone, come from Soma’s own kitchen, where she presides over the choices each day and works with her staff to create a variety of offerings including quiches and Paninis that also are made with fresh and local ingredients.
the unique
There has really been nothing like Localista in Bali before. Its breezy style makes it a perfect place to take a break, meet a friend, grab a bite and get your caffeine fix. The unique aspect though is really in the coffee itself, and the word on the street is that the coffee at Localista is the best available coffee on the island. This is something that the Localista aficionados swear by, and is borne out by the eclectic group of artists, local business people and visitors to the island who have been seen gathering at Localista.
The café’s aim is to provide coffee in an atmosphere that engenders good feelings, and I would say that Localista has got it absolutely right. Meet a client, sit with a friend or, better still, make it the venue of a first date. Localista is the perfect backdrop to any encounter of the coffee kind.
