sudamala suites & villas
where is it?
In Sanur.
what’s the resort like?
Sudamala has put a lot of effort into preserving and cherishing the unique Balinese touches inside and out. When we first stepped into the premise late at night, we were greeted by a huge mansion hugged by a cosy joint on the left and an attended open-air “lobby” with warm wood and elaborate carved exterior on the right. Immediately the image of a swanky, plush reception hall with with gadgets went right out of the window, and we gladly came to realise that, yes, this was Bali – not Singapore.
what are the suites like?
Though only recently opened, Sudamala’s 24 deluxe suites are up and running with a distinct Balinese style which takes shape in the stacked frangipani flower decoration, intricate tile motifs and beautiful roofing – combining dome architecture with wood and rattan knitting. We enjoyed the suites overlooking the Natah Saji courtyard. Visually, some interior elements – from the traditional Balinese double wooden door to multiple rattan chairs – really stood out and afforded a breeze to ordinary urban designs. The veranda is very much accommodating, making it the ideal place for honeymooners to share cups of hot tea on a serene evening. The bathroom is equally expansive, replete with rain and handheld showers, albeit without a bathtub.
what about the facilities?
The huge mansion at the forefront functions as an art shop. Add to that the Sudajiva spa, and a joglo (Javanese traditional house), and a decent-size swimming pool at the back – and clearly Sudamala is pretty charming for honeymoons. All this of course has the attention to detail of a Balinese mindset, meaning that you won’t have to go far to search for something authentic on the island.
what about food and drink?
Ares Restaurant beside the art shop naturally attracts passersby. The staff take pride in its range of traditional Balinese cuisine, especially Jukut Ares, which is a green salad with banana stalks. For ceremonial occasions, the courtyard is more than adequate. Our eyes feasted on a Balinese procession during our stay that “cleansed” the whole building. With sophisticated gamelan chimes and colourful offerings, the view was a treasure and so was the rich-tasting local food on offer.
