Nothing can change the magical allure of Bali. Its windswept mountains, lush forests, and expansive idyllic beaches are too enchanting to be overlooked. Shown by the unceasing numbers of visitors that return each year, the island's enduring pull proves undeniable and irresistible. The Balinese adhere to their unique brand of Hinduism, and are always ready to share their culture with visitors. Their spiritual roots are strong, and have remained virtually unchanged over the centuries. They are famously peaceful and tolerant in manner, however, it is important to be patient if caught in traffic due to ceremonial occasions, as honking will cause offence. Listed below are several important ceremonies for this month on the 'Island of a thousand Temples'.
8th – Purnama Sasih Karo (Full Moon)
The full moon falls today, and the Balinese will be travelling back and
forth from the temples in celebration of the 'purnama' to have blessings
bestowed by priests on food, flowers and fruit. These will then be used
as offerings. The Balinese will then be blessed in turn by rituals using
Holy Water, rice grains, petals and cleansing incense smoke.
17th – Independence Day
Indonesia will celebrate 61 years of independence today. All official
buildings will be closed and red and white bunting and flags will adorn
many buildings across the island. Join in the festivities by venturing
out and finding somewhere fun and lively.
21st – Isra Mi’raj Nabi Muhammad
Today is a national holiday celebrating this Muslim religious holiday.
All government buildings and banks will be closed.
26th – Tumpek Wayang
This is an auspicious day of ceremonies to worship Sang Hyang Sangkara
who is the Lord of Puppeteers. The prayers offered today request the success
of the shadow puppet play sets. Shadow Puppet Shows can be enjoyed every
Wednesday & Sunday at Oka Kartini's, in Ubud at 20:00, or sometimes
by chance when passing through villages.
