Alila living gallery and bundhowi send "an invitation to peace"
December 15 - March 15, 2006
Alila
Living gallery at Alila Ubud is closing the year and beginning the 2007
with a hopeful note by showcasing paintings and photography of Muhammad
Bundhowi under the theme of "An Invitation to Peace". During
this exhibition, the lensman Bundhowi includes his very latest works which
depict the earthquake hit city of Yogyakarta. Despite the despair that
tends to bloom from such disaster, Bun prefers to look for the spiritual
resilience and rebuilding of it all. In "An invitation to Peace"
Bundhowi exposes his newest evolution as a painter and photographer. As
before, his images, while rooted in reality, also display other worldliness
of a man seeking to live according to his ideas. A long time resident
of Bali, the tragic bombs that temporarily broke the island's peace stimulated
him to experiment with a new media – photography and mixed media
using photo montage much inspired by Man Ray and Richard Rosenblum. Bundhowi's
recent personal photography mission in Yogyakarta, during which he also
took pictures for the Australian Medical Assistance Team (AMAT), gave
him opportunities to record, react and interpret what he saw. Then he
worked on the raw images into striking compelling photographs focusing
on the rebuilding and peace, instead of death and suffering.

A MASTER AT UN'S
Bali
has many talented artists, but everyone is talking about the talent
of Italian artist Pietro Crivelli, whose stunning oils of Bali are being
exhibited throughout the month at Un's Restaurant in Poppies Lane, Kuta.
Pietro's impressive family background reads like an artist's fairytale
– his father, along with three other artists, launched the Italian
‘Neo Realism' painting group in 1936 after studying at the Academy
of Fine Arts in Florence – where Pietro himself later became a student.
In the present, Pietro uses Bali as his inspiration, as he once again
finds the innocent beauty of nature and happiness of the rural life that
was apparent in his beloved Italy more than 50 years ago. His paintings
are moving, and simply beautiful. Why not check it out!

GANESHA GALLERY
December 5 - January 5 2007
A
new exhibition at Ganesha Gallery showcases Balinese artist, Ida Bagus
Indra, who has long had a special affinity for themes. Some, like his
paintings of children mimicking adults, were not only striking for their
beauty but also their good natured social criticism of contemporary Balinese
society intransition. His new exhibition, entitled Sweet Coffee, shows
Indra's view in a far more ambiguous manner as he explores the nighttime
world of the simple warungs that dominate Balinese village life. Excelling
in the recreation of moonlight and oil lamps, Indra shows us a side of
life rarely seen by foreigners, as young Balinese girls and boys flirt
or gossip with each other. Notably women, with their seemingly mask-like
faces painted white and luscious red lips, dominate, in contrast to men,
who largely sit in the shadows like anonymous voyeurs.
Like many artists before him, Indra, is obviously attracted to the
sensual undercurrents of this theme, but at the same time repelled by
some of its implications and associations. This is best seen in 'Low Cost
Perfume & Gasoline', a rather thought provoking and simultaneously
appropriate title for a painting of a pretty young village girl in a red
kebaya squatting on an earthen floor as she lights a petrol stove.
One can speculate that Indra, influenced by the Hindu belief that
all things, especially beauty and youth, will one day fade and perish
and wishes to distance himself from such temptations. While the question
of mortality may weigh heavily on his mind, in the meantime we can view
the remarkable new visual creations as a significant milestone in the
career of one of Bali's most talented young artists.

Exhibition at Sukma Gallery by Sylvana
Opening November, 27th
Working with dots has a deep meaning for Sylvana. "The work itself is meditative, like making mandalas or mozaics - step by step - dot by dot the painting is arising and developing. It can be compared to life - the paintings are started at one point - with one dot. For all of us this is the same. We all start living at one point. It doesn't matter if you look at the biological side or the philosophical. Its the microcosm and macrocosm. The whole universe consists of so many small bits of life and in the end all becomes a circle. It is what I really love about life. It doesn't matter what problems we have to solve or how hard it is sometimes. We should always remember that everything is happening for a reason and that there is a really strong universal energy - some people call it god...this is worth believing in. In the end it all becomes round and just beautiful - the circle of life." Sylvana grew up in East Germany and studied art but was not impressed. "I can't really say what art is...it's relative and a question of attitude...as many things in this life..."

RIP CURL'S GIRLS GO SURFING DAY ON DOUBLE SIX BEACH
Legian, Bali. November 06, 2006
Girls
between the ages of 9 and 12 from three orphanages in Denpasar were treated
to surf lessons at 66 Beach in Legian, then went home with food, school
supplies, vouchers, stickers, t-shirts and other goodies that will make
this Sunday one of their most memorable days of the year. This Girls Go
Surfing Day was a little different as sponsors were solicited to give
cash and donations in order to make this a charity function for the underprivileged
orphan girls of Denpasar. Sponsors from various segments of the Bali community
joined in to ensure that the girls went home with plenty of material goods
in addition to the stoked feeling that only surfing can give. This Rip
Curl Girls Go Surfing Day was made possible through the support of ID
Girl, Oakley, Seaside Restaurant, Blue Ocean Restaurant, Bali Discovery
Travel, Light Surfboards, Pegasus Indonesia Tour and Travel and of course the Rip Curl School of Surf. The event was followed by a ceremony for Tiwi and Ayu, two great friends to many of the Bali Surfing Community who had been killed in an motorbike accident a week before the event. Ayu had played a major part in organizing the Girls go Surfing days. "She was so kind and friendly to everyone, and so who could say no to her when she would go out looking for sponsors for an event like this? She believed in what she was doing and the success of the event was due to her dedication. We miss her every day" said Jonni, Manager of the Rip Curl School of Surf.
